  1. First you become a “nurse” an RN if you will and from there you can work in the field of your choice such as mental health.

  2. In the UK, mental health nurses require a secondary school education (or equivalent), a nursing diploma or degree and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

In the UK, the term “mental health nurse” is usually applied rather than “psychiatric-mental health nurse”, the term used in the US. Mental health nurses are responsible for implementing and reviewing the delivery of nursing care to people with mental health problems.

Steps to Becoming a Mental Health Nurse

To become a registered mental health nurse (RMN), the following is required:

Completion of secondary school qualifications or equivalent.
Completion of a nursing diploma or degree.
Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the body responsible for regulating nursing practice.
Once in a mental health nursing position, the nurse must continue with their learning in order to ensure their knowledge is up to date (this is called Continuing Professional Development). Qualified nursing grades go from D to I, where D is entry-level. As nurses gain experience, they can progress to jobs with a higher grade.

  3. Mental health nursing courses only give you more education in that specific field, but you need to get your general Registered Nurse degree first (either associate’s or bachelors). You don’t have to become a hospital nurse, and you can actually go ahead and become a mental health nurse right away if you get hired as one.

  4. what type of nurse will you become. Some institutions/state laws will limit the type of nurse that can be employed in MH (mental health). The short answer to your question is NO, but again, laws & institution policy may limit your job possibilities. As an LPN or RN once your pass boards, you are able to work in MH facilities or hospital geriatric units. In Oklahoma, when I finish LPN school I could go straight to a pediatric MH hospital or a hospital MH floor. The biggest factors are probably state laws & institution policies though. I typed it 3x, did I get through to you? LOL !!! hope this helps.
