Question by babyblue: What psychology classed should I take in college?
I want to be a psychologist (therapist, counselor) for teen girls. So what type of classes do I take for that? Do they have psychology for teens? And how do I decide what kind of psychologist I want to be. Are there any good books about psychology I should read? I’m just a little confused on how I become a specific type a psychologist.
-thanks!

First speak with your guidance counselor and if he/she isn’t any help i think you should start off with Psychology 101. The basic and branch off from there.

  1. Well, in order to be a psychologist, you will need a ph.D.
    – Bachelor’s degree — preferably an honours degree – 4 years
    – Master’s degree — 2 years
    – Ph.D. — 5 years

In your undergraduate years (BA or Bsc), you won’t specialise in any area of psychology — just psychology broadly. You’ll start off with Psycology 101 (intro to psychology) in your first year. Then in you second, third, and fourth year, you’ll take many different courses such as social psychology, developmental psychology, personality, abnormal psychology, multivariate statistics, research methods, and learning (to name a few). Then when you go for your master’s, you can start to specialise an a particular area.

However, if you just want to be a therapist/counselor and not necessarily a psychologist per se, a master’s degree will suffice.

    Good luck!
