Question by guitarman: How can your mental health get worse after you see a therapist?
I can’t figure this out. I go see this therapist and I don’t like her. But they won’t let me have another therapist unless I go before a long drawn out red tape process. But anyways, I call up to get another appointment and the soonest they can get me in is like a month from now. So I told the receptionist, “Somehow my mental health gets worse after I call or visit the mental health association.”

Question by Serenade: How is psychology the opposite of religion?
I’ve read some books lately and two or three of them have basically said that practicing psychology (especially some of the psychoanalytical methods) and some other social sciences are the opposite of religion. I always thought, at least in the case of psychology, that social sciences try to help and understand others. I also though religion tried to help and understand others, so how are they opposite?

Psychology is concerned with the truth. Religion is concerned with convincing you it’s the truth.

Question by What Dreams May Come: Psychologists and Psychology majors: Is it common for rape victims to become interested in pornography?
If you work in the Psychology field or are studying Psychology, is it fairly common for people who have been the victim of rape to become interested in pornography or explicit material? If so, why?
Best answer:
Answer by Move on
For any victim it is a case by case cause and affect. But in general I would say no. It is not one of the common reactions.

Question by Amelia: are forensic psychology programs more or less competitive than others?
I want to do forensic psychology, is it harder to get into than other kinds of psychology?
Best answer:
Answer by Gmac9
Yeah, not in terms of the difficulty level but the demand. Forensic psychologists often work in prisons and police stations (each police station would probably have either one or none and prisons very few) so there really aren’t very many though they are often portrayed in movies a lot. It would definitely be easier to find a job as a clinical or educational psychologist who works in clincs/schools/in some government organisation.

Question by ricksed: Career in psychology without being a psychiatrist?
I want to work in the field of psychology but don’t want to be a psychiatrist. Mainly I want to study psychology, in other words be a psychologist, do I have to go through medical school, internship, etc. (the doctor process) to be one? Is a psychologist a doctor?
Best answer:
Answer by TedEx
Many psychologists doing in clinical work have an MS degree or PhD or an DSW ((Doctorate on social work) Ifhe has a OPhd or DSW, he certainly ius a doctor, although he is not a medical doctor.
My son in law’s father spent a career in the Air Force as a psychologist. He has a master’s degree in science in Psychology.
Psychologists can do a lot of the counseling that mght be done by a psychiatrist. They , however, cannot presacribe drugs. That must be done by a doctor ( MD-type doctor, that is)

A classic (and one you may be assigned to read anyway) is “Man and His Symbols” by Carl Jung. I cannot say how it may apply to criminal psychology, however, at least not specifically. Still, it is a very interesting book.

Question by linz509: What mental health services could you benefit from?
Hi, I’m conducting an informal survey for mental health services, my question is, if you were to receive counseling or assistance from a mental health services provider, what would you want? For example if you are depressed, what kind of attention/care would you hope to get? I appreciate your time. Thanks!

I am already on medication for both BiPolar and anxiety, so I suppose that talk therapy about the causes of my episodes would be helpful, too.

Psychology is one of the most popular majors in spite of the fact there are essentially no jobs for a person with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
You can only realistically expect to make a living in this field if you get a PhD so you can set yourself up in private practice as a Psychologist. To do this you have to graduate from your bachelors program with a GPA of at least 3.0. If you think you can do this and commit yourself to at least 4 years of additional schooling after you get your bachelors, then great.
But if you do not think you will get at least a 3.0 or do not intend to stay in school past your bachelors degree then you should consider a different field.
And since you need a PhD and once you have a PhD no one really cares where you got your bachelors, just go to the place you can go for the cheapest, generally your closest state university, as an in state student.
If you do not want to pursue a masters in Psychology, you can also go into a masters program in a lot of other areas or to law school as well.
People with only an undergrad degree in psychology made a starting salary of $ 36,000 per year on average in 2009 according to:
